독립운동의 실존 인물을 바탕으로 제작된 인도의 환타지 영화 RRR

제목인 R.R.R은 각각 Rise(저항), Roar(포효), Revolt(봉기)의 뜻

2022년 3월 25일 개봉한 인도의 액션 영화. 바후발리 시리즈를 연출한 S. S. 라자몰리 감독이 감독과 각본을 맡았다. 1920년대 인도 제국 시대를 배경으로 영국에 저항한 실존 인물을 모티브로 한 두 주인공의 이야기를 다룬다.

발리우드가 아닌 톨리우드 영화로, 텔루구어를 쓴다. 넷플릭스에서는 판권 문제 때문에 힌디어 더빙과 영어 더빙으로 제공된다.

두 주인공인 빔(Komaram Bheem, 1900~1940)과 라주(Alluri Sitarama Raju, 1897~1924)는 실존인물로 텔루구어권 출신의 인도 독립운동가들이다.

두 인물의 일대기를 토대로 만들어진 영화지만 실제 두 인물의 활동 범위나 시간대[10]를 생각하면 극중에서 묘사된 것처럼 브로맨스를 자랑하는 친우사이는 아니었다.

대한민국으로 대입하면 안중근 의사와 윤봉길 의사를 각각 모티브로 삼은 히어로 캐릭터들이 함께 등장하는 어벤저스같은 히어로 판타지 무비 느낌.

영화에서는 두 주인공 모두 해피엔딩을 맞이하는 것으로 끝났지만, 실제 역사에서는 정반대로 새드엔딩을 맞았는데 두 주인공 모두 조국의 독립을 보지 못하고 영국군에게 살해당했다.

시타라마 라주는 활과 화살을 든 후반부의 모습의 동상이 대표적인 모습으로 묘사되며 초기에 전통적인 무기로 영국에 대항하다가 부족함을 느끼고 경찰서를 습격해서 무기를 탈취했다.

영화에서 그의 약혼녀로 나오는 시타는 실제로는 그가 사랑했던 친구의 여동생으로 그녀가 요절하면서 그녀를 기리기 위해 그녀의 이름을 자신의 이름 앞에 붙였다고 한다. 1924년에 결국 경찰들에게 잡혀서 총살당했고 이후 독립운동 영웅으로 추앙받았다.

코마람 빔은 곤드 부족의 일원으로 태어났다. 문명과 동떨어진 생활을 하던 곤드 부족은 어느 지역에 정착해 농사를 하다가 지주의 핍박을 받게 되는데 1920년 빔이 고위 관원을 살해하고 도망한다.

오랜 도피 생활 중 시타라마 라주의 반란 소식을 들었다고 하며 이 소식에 고무되었다고 한다. 즉, 둘이 실제로 만난 적은 없으며 빔이 도망자 시절 시타라마 라주는 이미 유명한 투쟁가였다.

오랜 도피 생활 후 다시 곤드 지역으로 돌아와 곤드 왕국을 선언하고 무장 투쟁을 하다가 1940년에 무장 경찰에게 살해당했다. 그의 사망 이후 곤드 반란의 상징이 되었다고 한다.
